Concerns about the development of cancer after breast augmentation with implants still exist. However, these concerns are not backed by scientifically proven evidence. Ukrainian plastic surgeon Dmytro Slosser explained why such fears are mistaken.

According to him, there was a time in the past when silicone implants were banned in the United States. They were replaced with implants filled with saline solution. This led to a wave of medical tourism — American women began traveling en masse to Mexico to get traditional silicone implants.

The situation has since changed.

The shell in both cases is made of silicone. The body interacts not with the content, but with the shell. So essentially, both are silicone implants, the doctor explains.

Eventually, the safety of silicone implants was proven. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially approved their use.

Popular myths about mammoplasty

One common concern among women is that after breast implant surgery, they will no longer be able to breastfeed. But this is a myth.

According to the surgeon, when the operation is done correctly, the implant is placed under the pectoral muscle, minimizing any physical impact on the breast tissue.

All my patients who had the surgery done using the proper technique are able to breastfeed, the doctor notes.

This way, both the ability to lactate and breast sensitivity are preserved after augmentation.

Many also believe that after breast augmentation, you can't sleep on your stomach or lift your arms. Modern surgical techniques have significantly simplified the recovery process, says Slosser.

You can even drink champagne the next day after the surgery. They usually lie on their side on the third day after the operation. And not only is it possible to lie on the stomach, but I insist that they start lying on a hard surface a month later, the doctor explains.

All restrictions are typically lifted a month after surgery: you can exercise, sleep in any position, and return to your normal lifestyle.

Recovery after mammoplasty is usually easy: you may experience a feeling of heaviness, slight swelling, or bruising, which are normal parts of the rehabilitation process.
