Canada seeks support from allies to allow Ukraine to target Russian territory
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, at a peace formula conference in Montreal, stated that Canada is attempting to convince other nations to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of weapons, enabling it to strike targets within Russian territory.
Joly stated that Canada supports Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied long-range weapons against targets in Russia, emphasizing that Ukraine needs this capability for self-defense.
“We are also seeking to persuade other countries to adopt this position,” Joly declared.
Weapon restrictions overview
Several countries have permitted Ukraine to use donated weapons within Russian territory, including Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, and the Baltic states.
However, some countries have set restrictions on weapon use. For instance, Germany allows strikes only in border areas if there is a direct threat to Ukraine.
Additionally, the United States and the United Kingdom, which have supplied Ukraine with long-range missiles, do not permit strikes deep into Russia.
The Pentagon has noted that Russia has allegedly moved targets beyond the reach of the ATACMS missiles provided to Ukraine, positioning them 300 kilometers from the border.
