Bundestag to discuss supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine today
Bundestag to discuss supplying Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles capable of destroying targets at a distance of up to 500 kilometers, according to Tagesschau.
Two proposals will be submitted to the Bundestag: the SPD, Greens, and FDP parties, which are part of the traffic light coalition, call for the supply of additional long-range weapons systems in more general terms, while the CDU/CSU opposition directly mentions Taurus in its proposal.
Back in May of last year, the Ukrainian side addressed the German government with an official request for the supply of Taurus cruise missiles. Since then, the discussion has not subsided.
"The results of the discussions in the Bundestag will be more of a formality, as the decision itself depends on the government," the agency says.
Taurus for Ukraine
Since last year, Ukraine has been calling on Germany to start supplying long-range Taurus missiles. However, Berlin has so far refused to make such deliveries.
According to media reports, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is against it. He is worried that the missiles could be used to strike at Russian territory.
Recently, the German CDU/CSU party submitted a draft resolution to the Bundestag calling for the provision of Taurus to Ukraine, but it was not supported.
