The British government has officially decided on a successor to John Healey. The country's new defense secretary is experienced politician and veteran Dan Jarvis, according to Sky News.
Keir Starmer announced the appointment personally. The prime minister emphasized national security, stating that the situation in the world requires decisive action and that every threat will be met with a response.
"My first duty is to keep the British people safe, and I will always do what is necessary to protect our national security," Sir Keir Starmer said.
The head of government is confident in his choice. Jarvis is expected to strengthen London’s position on the international stage. Defense funding is also expected to continue increasing.
Starmer added: "I am pleased to appoint Dan Jarvis as defence secretary as we strengthen our armed forces and meet the growing threats facing our country. This Labour government is delivering the largest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War."
Who Dan Jarvis is
The official has extensive military background. Jarvis served as an officer in the Parachute Regiment from 1997 to 2011. He also took part in various military conflicts in some of the world’s most active hotspots.
During his service, he was deployed to challenging missions:

- Afghanistan
Jarvis began his political career in 2011 when he was elected Member of Parliament for Barnsley Central. He also served as Mayor of South Yorkshire for four years, which helped shape his leadership experience.

What preceded Dan Jarvis's appointment
Less than a day earlier, defense secretary John Healey resigned. He was reportedly dissatisfied with the funding allocated to the British army.
