Ukraine should be able to use long-range weapons against Russian territory. European Union countries should support this, according to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

Ahead of a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Borrell expressed hope that bloc members would eventually agree to allow Ukraine to use weapons to strike inside Russia.

“I’ve been saying once and again that Ukraine should be able to use the arms provided to them in order to not only to stop the arrow but also to be able to hit the archers,” Borrell said.

According to him, he is convinced that EU members will discuss this issue again.

He expressed hope that member states would reach an agreement on the matter.

Strikes deep into Russia

In recent months, Ukraine has been actively asking the United States and its allies to allow the use of Western weapons to strike Russian army targets located far inside Russian territory. Until recently, Washington has been cautious on this issue, avoiding steps that could lead to an escalation.

However, according to Western media reports on November 17, President Joe Biden's administration approved the use of US long-range ATACMS missiles for such operations. Reuters notes that Ukraine could implement these attacks soon.

At the same time, Axios clarifies that the US authorization applies exclusively to strikes in the Kursk region. This decision is presumably aimed at deterring North Korea from further deploying its military to Russia.

Also yesterday, Le Figaro wrote about the permission from the UK and France to use long-range SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles to strike at Russian territory but later changed the text.
