Borrell on whether EU aid to Ukraine will change if Trump is elected
The European Union will continue to support Ukraine in the war, regardless of whether Donald Trump is elected president of the United States, according to EU High Representative Josep Borrell.
"I don’t know what the American administration will or will not do. For now, let me say that, at this moment, support from the European Union — military, civil, economic, financial, and humanitarian — exceeds that of the US. More than $100 billion — that's the bill we’ve paid. Among this, $50 billion is military support. Certainly, this is less than what the US has provided, but it is still a significant figure," he said.
According to him, at the beginning of the war, the difference between the military capabilities of Russia and Ukraine was incredible, and the fact that Ukraine resisted was, in a way, a miracle.
"In the beginning, remember what we were offering Ukraine? Helmets! Now we are offering F-16s, and there’s quite a difference there. One thing is clear to me: as long as Ukraine resists, we must support it. Otherwise, we will make a historic mistake," Borrell said.
Trump's statements on Ukraine
The US presidential election will take place in November. At present, the candidates for the presidency are Republican and former US President Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris.
Trump has already made several statements about the war in Ukraine and US assistance. In particular, it was recently reported that if Trump is elected president, US military assistance to Ukraine will be contingent on Kyiv entering peace negotiations with Russia.
Moreover, RBC-Ukraine reported that if Trump returns to the White House, he will promote his own deal between Ukraine and Russia.
