The European Union's main security task in relation to Ukraine is its membership in the bloc, states Josep Borrell.

During his speech at the Munich conference, Borrell said that the most important geopolitical issues facing the EU today are related to Ukraine, Gaza, the global south and defense.

"We have to increase and provide Ukraine with security commitments," he said, adding that "the most important security commitment for Ukraine is membership" in the EU.

In particular, he warned that the EU should consider different scenarios regarding the extent to which the United States will be involved in European security.

Ukraine's accession to the EU

In December, the leaders of the EU member states approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the bloc during a summit. This happened despite Hungary's threats to block this decision.

In a recent interview with RBC-Ukraine, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernová said that the talks could start in the spring.

The Cabinet of Ministers has also recently approved an action plan to implement the European Commission's recommendations for starting negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU.
