Border clashes intensify in Ukraine's Sumy region - Regional administration

As of the evening of May 29, fighting continues along parts of the border in Ukraine's Sumy region, particularly near the settlements of the Khotin and Yunakivka communities. The situation is difficult but under control, said the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration Oleh Hryhorov.
"As of the evening of May 29, the operational situation remains difficult but controlled. Active fighting continues in certain areas along the border, particularly near the settlements of the Khotin and Yunakivka communities. The enemy is operating in small groups, attempting to infiltrate and gain a foothold in border villages," Hryhorov wrote on his Facebook.

According to him, the situation on the front line is constantly changing. In some areas, Ukrainian forces hold the initiative, while in others, Russian troops are more active. Nevertheless, the Defense Forces are holding their ground.
"Ukrainian Armed Forces, border guards, the National Guard, and all elements of the defense forces are heroically repelling the occupiers," the governor added.
He said the Regional Military Administration, in coordination with the military, is implementing a series of measures to strengthen the protection of citizens and territory.
"I personally stay in constant 24/7 contact with military command. We respond to every change in the situation quickly and in coordination. We are working proactively. At the same time, I urge residents of border areas not to delay evacuation. It's a difficult decision, but life is the highest value. We will help everyone in need. No one will be left alone with their troubles," Hryhorov stated.
According to him, over 50 people were evacuated from border communities in the Sumy region over the past day.
"Dear residents of the region, please do not fall for enemy disinformation. Stay alert and trust only official and verified sources of information," the head of the Regional Military Administration added.
Situation in the Sumy region
Back in late March, several Western media outlets reported that Russian forces were preparing for a new military offensive against Ukraine.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi later stated that Russia had, in fact, already launched an offensive on the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russian troops have been on the offensive across all front line for several months. He emphasized that the enemy is focusing its greatest efforts on the Sumy region.
Ukraine's Operational Tactical Group Kharkiv also reported that Russian forces are building up troops and that the summer offensive campaign has essentially already begun.
Meanwhile, Head of the Council of Reservists of Ukraine's Ground Forces, Ivan Tymochko, assessed whether there is currently a threat to Sumy.
Ukraine's State Border Guard Service noted that Russia has been amassing forces in Russia's Kursk region for several months. At present, there are enough troops there to launch an offensive on the Sumy region.
