Many people take vitamins haphazardly, hoping some supplements can extend life.

Ukrainian professor and dietitian Oleh Shvets on Facebook reveals whether this is really true.

A study that changes our view on supplements

New scientific data provide serious evidence for the benefits of multivitamin-mineral complexes. Despite millions of people worldwide taking these supplements daily, science has long been skeptical.

In the large-scale COSMOS study, scientists analyzed how daily multivitamin intake affects a person’s biological age. It was measured using so-called epigenetic clocks — modern biomarkers that assess aging processes at the DNA level.

How the study was conducted

Over 21,000 older adults participated in the project. Some participants received a daily multivitamin-mineral complex, while others received cocoa extract or a placebo.

Scientists analyzed DNA methylation changes — a process directly linked to aging. Special attention was given to key epigenetic clocks that predict disease risk and lifespan.

What results were found

It turned out that regular multivitamin use can slow biological aging. Specifically, two important markers decreased by approximately 1.4–2.6 months per year.

The greatest effect was observed in people with accelerated aging, where the changes were more noticeable. At the same time, cocoa extract showed no effect on these processes.

Nutrients play a crucial role

The study also showed that nutrient deficiencies are associated with faster aging. In contrast, higher levels of elements such as folate, lutein, and vitamins B12 and D are linked to slower age-related changes.

Results from other studies support these findings. For example, Omega-3 intake may also positively influence epigenetic processes.

Does this mean a fountain of youth?

Despite the encouraging results, scientists urge caution. There is currently no evidence that multivitamins can significantly extend life.

Experts emphasize that the foundation of healthy aging remains a balanced diet, physical activity, quality sleep, and avoiding harmful habits.
