Blender safety alert: One mistake can put your health at risk

A blender is a popular kitchen gadget. A common mistake when using it is blending hot liquids in a closed container, which can lead to scalding spills and serious burns.
Why you shouldn't mix hot liquids
It can cause burns
Chef Chris Valdes explained that one of the biggest mistakes is blending very hot liquids in a sealed blender without a steam vent.
When you blend something like hot soup or sauce straight from the stove, the heat generates pressure inside the blender. If the lid is closed tightly, it can cause severe burns.
Lid can cause injury
A tightly sealed lid traps hot air inside, which can force it off entirely. That's why blender manuals warn against blending hot liquids without proper ventilation.
The force of a lid flying off can also cause injury.
Fortunately, most blenders have a removable center cap, which is typically used for adding ingredients while blending.
Major mess
Liquids expand and move quickly once the blades start spinning, which can lead to spills or even pop the lid off. This can create a mess on your countertop and cabinets.
Safe habits to follow
Avoid overfilling the blender. Too much liquid can cause the lid to pop off. When the blender runs, hot liquids expand, increasing pressure inside.
Some blenders have max-fill lines. Always follow these indicators.
Let liquids cool first. To safely blend hot soup, let it cool for a few minutes. Blend in batches and open the lid to allow steam to escape. This makes the process safer and much less messy.
Start at low speed. Always begin blending hot liquids on a low setting, even if you've properly vented the lid and are using a towel for extra protection.
Gradually increase speed as needed.
Ensure your blender is safe. Before using a blender for hot soup or other heated liquids, make sure it's designed for that purpose. Many modern blenders are made for hot liquids, featuring proper top ventilation and heat-resistant containers.
