During the night of October 22, the city of Saransk in the Republic of Mordovia was attacked by unidentified drones. Russian sources claim that the strike targeted one of the local industrial plants, according to Russian channels.

According to local channels, sounds resembling explosions were heard in the Saransk area shortly after 3 AM local time. A drone alert was later issued for the Republic of Mordovia, and several channels reported alleged interceptions.

Videos that later appeared online captured the sounds of explosions and flashes of fire from the impact. Reports claim that the Saransk mechanical plant came under attack.

No official comments have been issued so far.

The Saransk Mechanical Plant (SMZ) is listed among Russia’s defense industry enterprises, producing weapons and ammunition components.

In addition, the plant manufactures Torpedo-type rear bicycle hubs, as well as children’s, indoor, teenage, and road bicycles, pedal and battery-powered toy cars, and snow scooters. SMZ also produces straight-flow valves for compressors and is reportedly the only manufacturer of such components in Russia.

Other strikes across Russia

Earlier this year, on the night of April 5, unidentified drones also targeted a factory in Saransk. Russian channels reported that the optical fiber production facility had come under attack, sparking a large fire in the industrial area.

More recently, on the night of October 15, a drone strike hit the city of Ufa, reportedly targeting the Ufaorgsintez oil refinery in the city’s industrial zone.

Additionally, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that on October 21, Ukraine’s Defence Forces struck the Bryansk Chemical Plant with Storm Shadow missiles, causing significant damage during a missile attack.
