Biden reminds of aid to Ukraine on Holodomor anniversary
US President Joe Biden issued a statement in commemoration of the Holodomor. He noted that by honoring the anniversary of the Holodomor, the United States is also renewing its commitment to stand with the Ukrainian people in their time of need.
"Ninety-one years ago, Joseph Stalin and the Soviet regime engineered the Holodomor, a forced and deliberate famine that killed millions of Ukrainians. We remember the men, women, and children who perished during the Holodomor," Biden emphasized.
He said that the United States also honors the Holodomor survivors and their descendants, who, despite Stalin's efforts to suppress Ukrainian national identity, built a free, independent, and democratic Ukraine.
“Today, as we mark the solemn anniversary of the Holodomor, we also renew our commitment to stand with the Ukrainian people in their time of need. For nearly three years, Russia has been waging a brutal war against the Ukrainian people in an attempt to wipe Ukraine off the map,” he said.
Biden emphasized that despite all the efforts, Russia has failed, and Kyiv stands free.
“Kyiv stands free, thanks in part to the United States and the more than 50 other countries that are committed to providing Ukraine with the assistance it needs to defend itself,” he emphasized.
The Holodomor in Ukraine
In the 20th century, Ukrainians experienced three large-scale Holodomors: 1921-1923, 1932-1933, and 1946-1947. Every year on the fourth Saturday of November, Ukraine commemorates the victims of these tragedies.
Although the exact number of deaths is unknown, researchers and historians agree that it is a matter of millions of losses among Ukrainians.
As of today, about 30 countries have officially recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. The process of international recognition accelerated especially during the full-scale war in Ukraine.
