On Wednesday, October 9, US President Joe Biden will hold a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The leaders are expected to discuss the potential of Israeli strikes on Iran, reports Axios.

The information about the call was shared with the network by three US officials.

"We want to use the call to try and shape the limitations of the Israeli retaliation," one of the officials stated.

According to the official, Washington wants to ensure that Israel targets key sites in Iran, but that the attack remains proportional and not excessive.

Escalation in the Middle East

In the past month, the Israel Defense Forces have eliminated several leaders of Islamic groups in the Middle East, backed by Iran.

On July 31, in Tehran, the leader of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an explosion organized by Iranian agents working for Israel’s Mossad.

On September 27, Israeli Air Force strikes on the outskirts of Beirut killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was hiding in an underground bunker with other group leaders.

In response, Iran launched 180 ballistic missiles at Israel the same day. The attack caused no casualties and was largely ineffective.

Netanyahu vowed to retaliate for the missile strike, hinting at potential strikes on Iran's oil fields and even nuclear facilities. Tehran has promised to meet any retaliation with massive destruction, raising the risk of a wider war in the oil-rich region.

President Biden is attempting to dissuade Israel from following through on these plans to prevent further escalation.
