Russia deliberately struck a building at the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility near the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The president noted that Russia had deliberately targeted an extremely critical infrastructure facility.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, Energy Ministry, and all relevant agencies are already working to ensure that every partner is aware of the crimes being committed by the aggressor state.

Zelenskyy stressed that Russia intentionally targeted this specific piece of nuclear infrastructure.

"As of now, there are no readings exceeding normal background radiation levels. But there is certainly an increase in Russia’s brazenness, which long ago went off the charts. Ukrainian first responders extinguished the fire at this facility after the strike. And real new steps by the world are needed so that the Russians feel that this terrorist war of theirs is a blow to Russia itself," he said.

The president also added that Russia struck other civilian sites across 13 Ukrainian regions overnight.

Overall, during the past week, Russia launched 88 missiles, more than 3,250 attack drones, and about 1,800 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine.

Russia strikes nuclear fuel storage facility

Overnight on June 7, a Russian drone struck a building at a spent nuclear fuel storage site in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, causing a fire.

The drone hit the site of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF). The strike partially destroyed the container reception building.

The impact triggered a fire covering about 40 square meters. It was quickly contained and fully extinguished. No personnel were injured.

Ukraine's General Staff later clarified that the strike targeted a facility near the village of Buriakivka in the Kyiv region, approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

According to the military, the centralized storage facility is designed for the long-term and safe storage of spent nuclear fuel from Ukraine's nuclear power plants.

Remains of a Shahed attack drone were found at the site of the extinguished fire.

Radiation levels at the facility currently remain within normal limits, and specialists continue to monitor the situation.
