Mysterious ruins towering above a steep gorge conceal hundreds of medieval legends and captivate visitors with their wild, untouched beauty.

RBC-Ukraine tells the story of one of the least-known yet most impressive corners of the Carpathians — Colț Fortress (the ruins of Colț Castle), which is sure to delight lovers of peaceful, off-the-beaten-path excursions and scenic hiking routes through unspoiled landscapes.

Colț Fortress: A rocky nest on the edge of worlds

The ruins of the medieval Colț Fortress (Cetatea Colț) and the defensive church of the same name are located in the picturesque foothills of the Southern Carpathians (the Retezat Mountains). Built in the 14th century by the noble Cândea family, this citadel is considered one of the oldest stone defensive complexes in the region.

The fortress is literally embedded in a sharp rock, offering a spectacular view of the river valley and the wild mountain ranges. Thanks to its unique and hard-to-reach terrain, the castle served as a reliable refuge during enemy invasions.

Incidentally, it was this abandoned citadel, shrouded in mist, that once inspired the legendary writer Jules Verne to create his famous novel The Carpathian Castle.

Why this route is special and how to prepare for it

The main highlight of a trip to Colț is its absolute authenticity. There are no noisy tourist crowds, souvenir shops, or plastic fences here. You are left alone with the grandeur of the mountains and medieval history.

To make your walk to the rocky fortress as enjoyable as possible, keep a few things in mind:

  • Difficulty of the hike: The trail leading to the fortress is quite steep, passing through rocky sections and forested slopes. It requires about 40–50 minutes of active uphill hiking.

  • Equipment: No city sneakers with smooth soles or, even worse, open sandals. Only reliable hiking shoes with good traction, a comfortable backpack, and a bottle of water.

  • Colț Defensive Church: At the foot of the rock, be sure to visit the 14th-century stone church with its unique bell tower, which also served as a military outpost. It is still active today, and its walls preserve fragments of ancient frescoes.

Standing on top of the ruined tower, where the wind hums through the old stones, you begin to experience time in a completely different way. This is a journey not just for beautiful social media photos, but for the rare silence found only in the heart of ancient mountains.
