Beijing responds to Zelenskyy's criticism of China and Brazil's 'peace plan'
China maintains contact with Ukraine regarding the resolution of the war. Following criticism of its "peace plan" by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Beijing has said it will continue to facilitate a political settlement of the "crisis," according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.
The spokesperson addressed Zelenskyy's recent criticism of the so-called "peace plan" proposed by China and Brazil. The president called the plan destructive.
She reminded that China and Brazil had put forward six joint agreements aimed at addressing the urgent priority of de-escalating the situation.
"The common understandings stress that all relevant parties need to observe three principles for de-escalating the situation, namely no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting, and no provocation by any party. It also calls on all parties to be committed to dialogue and negotiation, increase humanitarian assistance, oppose the use of nuclear weapons, oppose attacks on nuclear power plants, and protect the stability of global industrial and supply chains," said Mao Ning.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, China's and Brazil's peace initiatives have received a positive response from over 110 countries.
She added that China will continue to insist on a political resolution to the "Ukrainian crisis" (as Beijing refers to Russia's war against Ukraine).
"On the Ukraine crisis, including the six common understandings, China has maintained close communication with Ukraine. China will continue promoting talks for peace and playing a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis," the spokesperson said.
Context
China and Brazil had agreed on a joint so-called peace plan concerning Ukraine. However, representatives of the Ukrainian government criticized these peace initiatives.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that alternative peace plans for Ukraine are political statements lacking specificity and a concrete course of action.
Recently, Zelenskyy also called the China-Brazil peace plan destructive, stressing that the plan does not account for the real situation and was pre-approved by the Kremlin.
