In Sierra Leone, militants attacked military barracks, a prison, and several other facilities. As a result, 20 people were killed, and almost 1,900 prisoners escaped, according to Reuters.
On Sunday morning, the attackers carried out a shooting in the capital city of Freetown. According to Sierra Leone Army spokesperson Colonel Issa Bangura, among the 20 dead were 13 soldiers, three attackers, a police officer, a civilian, and a private security worker. In addition, eight people were injured, and three were arrested.
Furthermore, during a two-hour attack on the Pademba Road prison, militants managed to break through its main gates. Approximately 1,890 prisoners escaped, with only 23 of them apprehended so far.
Prison riots
In July of this year, mass riots erupted in Ecuadorian prisons, resulting in the death of 18 inmates and the capture of nearly 100 prison guards.
A similar mass riot occurred in a prison near the capital of Honduras, where at least 41 women were killed, some of whom were burned alive.
The worst prison disaster of the century also occurred in Honduras in 2012 at the Comayagua prison, where 361 inmates died in a fire. Most of the victims had not been accused or convicted of any crimes.
