Ballistic missiles and Zircons got through: Inside Russia's overnight attack on Ukraine

Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine on July 6 using various types of missiles and drones. Kyiv was the primary target, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
How many weapons did Russia use?
The attack began at 6:00 p.m. on July 5 and continued overnight into July 6. Russia targeted Ukraine with attack drones as well as air-, ground-, and sea-launched missiles.
The Air Force's radio engineering units detected a total of 419 aerial attack weapons, including:
- 68 missiles of various types;
- 351 attack drones.
Russia's missile arsenal included:
- 6 Zircon/Oniks anti-ship missiles (launched from Russia's Kursk region);
- 23 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles (launched from Russia's Bryansk, Oryol, and Kursk regions);
- 33 Kh-101 cruise missiles (launched from Russia's Vologda region);
- 6 Kalibr cruise missiles (launched from Novorossiysk).
Russia also launched Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and Parodiya decoy drones from multiple directions.
What Ukraine's air defenses intercepted
The attack was repelled by fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces.
According to preliminary data as of 8:30 a.m., Ukraine's air defenses destroyed or suppressed 363 aerial targets, including:
- 37 missiles;
- 326 drones of various types.
In particular, air defenses shot down 31 Kh-101 cruise missiles and all 6 Kalibr cruise missiles.
Where the missiles and drones hit
According to preliminary information as of 8:30 a.m., 29 ballistic missiles, including anti-ship missiles, and 18 attack drones struck their targets.
Falling debris from intercepted drones was also recorded at 16 locations.
Aftermath of the attack on Kyiv
Meanwhile, the first reports of casualties emerged in Kyiv following the overnight attack. Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that 11 people were killed and another 46 were injured in the strike on the capital.
As RBC-Ukraine previously reported, traffic had to be restricted on several streets in Kyiv due to the aftermath of the strikes. Public transportation routes have also been affected.
