The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan summoned the Russian ambassador in connection with the overnight attack on Kyiv, which damaged the embassy building in the Ukrainian capital, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry website reported.
What the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry says
It is reported that Russian Ambassador Mikhail Yevdokimov was summoned to the Foreign Ministry building, where a protest was expressed over the fall of an Iskander missile on the territory of the Azerbaijani embassy.
The ambassador was handed a note and informed that the explosion destroyed part of the perimeter wall, damaged other buildings, service vehicles, the administrative building, and the consular section. In addition, damage was caused to the diplomatic compound. There were no casualties.
Not the first act against Azerbaijan
The Russian side was reminded that similar violations of international law had occurred during the Russian-Ukrainian war in the past.
For example, on March 10, 2022, Russians carried out an airstrike on the honorary consulate of Azerbaijan in Kharkiv.
On January 2, 2024, a Kinzhal missile strike 35 steps from the embassy building in Kyiv created a three-meter crater, and an unexploded munition was found at a depth of eight meters.
On August 28, 2025, a strike approximately 50 meters from the embassy also damaged the administrative building, consular section, and the ambassador's residence.
On 8 and 18 August 2025, Russian drones attacked a SOCAR fuel depot in the Odesa region, injuring employees and causing significant damage to the infrastructure.
What Azerbaijan wants from Russia
Official Baku notes that it had previously informed the Russian side about all incidents through official notes, and the coordinates of diplomatic buildings in Ukraine had been provided to Russia.
Moscow then assured that these coordinates would be taken into account by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
"During the meeting, it was stressed that such attacks on our diplomatic missions are unacceptable, and it was requested that the Russian side conduct an appropriate investigation into the issue and provide a detailed explanation," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported earlier that the Azerbaijani embassy building had been damaged during the nighttime attack on Kyiv.
More details about the damage in the area and in the nearby Heydar Aliyev Park can be found in the RBC-Ukraine report.
The leaders of Ukraine and Azerbaijan have already spoken by phone, and Ilham Aliyev condemned the latest Russian strike.
