Perfect photos, likes, instant feedback - all this seems familiar to every social media user. But how does this affect our self-esteem? Ukrainian crisis psychologist Oksana Don explains that social media can both support and destroy self-confidence.

Why are social networks popular

There are several reasons why the impact of social media has become so pronounced.

Massive use. The increasing number of social media users means that we are increasingly interacting with content that can affect our self-esteem.

Continuous access. Modern technology allows us to be online anytime, anywhere. This creates a constant flow of information and comparison.

Idealized images. Social media often shows idealized versions of life and appearance, which can create unrealistic standards and feelings of inferiority.

Fast feedback. Likes, comments, and followers provide instant feedback that can influence our perception of our own worth.

Cultural influence. Social media shapes and reflects current cultural norms and values, which can influence our personal perceptions of success, beauty, and status.

The negative side of social media

Comparing yourself to others. It's easy to fall into the trap of comparing your life to the "ideal" pictures people post on social media. This can lead to feelings of inferiority and lower self-esteem.

Cyberbullying. Negative comments and cyberbullying can cause serious damage to self-esteem.

Pressure to conform. The desire to conform to the standards of beauty and success popularized on social media can cause stress and dissatisfaction.

Social media as a resource

However, there is a flip side to this: positive comments can give you confidence, and access to quality information can help you grow.

Support and community. Social media can be a source of support and connection with like-minded people, which can have a positive impact on self-esteem.

Recognition and encouragement. Positive feedback and likes can boost self-confidence.

Education and self-development. Social media provides access to a huge amount of information and resources for learning, which can help boost personal confidence.

"So all of this together creates an environment in which self-esteem can be influenced in many ways. A balanced use of social media and critical thinking can help minimize the negative impact," emphasizes the expert.

In order not to fall into the trap of negative influence, Don advises to keep a balance:

  • be critical of the content
  • do not compare yourself with idealized images
  • focus on your own development.
