August to start with intense magnetic storms: Which days to watch out for Magnetic storms in August 2024 (RBC-Ukraine Collage)

Magnetic storms will hit Earth on the first Saturday of August and will continue throughout the weekend. Additionally, several more powerful red-level magnetic storms are expected in the last month of summer.

For details on when to expect these storms and how to protect your health in August, Meteoagent reports.

What is a magnetic storm?

Regular solar flares and eruptions lead to the release of large amounts of solar energy into space. This energy consists of charged particles — protons and electrons — that can move rapidly through space. When these particles reach Earth's magnetosphere, it causes activity known as a magnetic or solar storm.

Magnetic storms are categorized by their intensity, ranging from a K-index of 1 to a K-index of 9. Storms with a K-index of 5 or higher are classified as red-level storms and can affect human health.

They can cause symptoms such as worsened well-being, headaches, as well as disruptions in communication, satellites, and GPRS. During magnetic storms with a K-index of 8 or 9, polar auroras may also occur.

When will magnetic storms occur in August?

According to satellite systems NOAA, TESIS, and international meteorological laboratories worldwide, the first magnetic storm of August is expected on Saturday, the 3rd.

It will reach a red-level K-index of 6 and last throughout the weekend. The magnetosphere is expected to return to a stable state by Monday, August 5.

The next magnetic storm is anticipated from August 13 to 16, peaking on the first day with a red-level K-index of 5. The following days will see a medium-intensity storm, up to a K-index of 4.

At the end of the month, another powerful magnetic storm is forecasted to hit Earth from August 24 to 27. This storm is also expected to be red-level and reach a K-index of 6.

Impact of magnetic storms on humans

In recent years, scientists worldwide have conducted numerous studies on the impact of magnetic storms on human health. Indeed, there is a correlation, as supported by both research and medical observations.

Common complaints include:

  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Weakness
  • Increased fatigue
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Nighttime insomnia
  • Decreased concentration
  • Reduced work performance
  • Brain fog
  • Blood pressure issues
  • Mood deterioration
  • Increased anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Exacerbation of chronic illnesses
  • General decline in well-being

How to protect your health during magnetic storms

Doctors offer general advice for these days and recommend maintaining a regular daily routine, reducing physical and emotional stress, resting more, and breathing fresh air.

Additionally:

  • Get adequate sleep (7-9 hours)
  • Do exercises and take a contrast shower
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid excessive coffee, energy drinks, tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy foods
  • Ventilate your living space
  • Spend time outdoors
  • Consult a doctor if needed
