Attack on oil refinery in Novoshakhtinsk: Implications for Russia's military supply chain revealed
The oil refinery in Novoshakhtinsk, Russia, which was struck overnight, plays an important role in the defense industry of the Russian Federation, according to the head of the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), Andrii Kovalenko.
"Diesel fuel and jet fuel are critical resources for military equipment, tanks, armored vehicles, and aviation. The plant supplies these types of fuel to the Russian army," Kovalenko explained.
At the same time, the plant's proximity to the Ukrainian border makes it strategically important for the enemy in terms of logistics.
"Lubricants, fuel additives, and other products manufactured by the plant can be used both in the civilian sector and in military production," he added, noting that this makes the refinery a military target.
Attack on the Novoshakhtinsk refinery
Ukraine regularly carries out strikes on refineries in the Russian Federation, primarily using drones. These actions aim to weaken Russia's military infrastructure and reduce its ability to supply fuel for military needs. Attacks on Russian refineries also affect the domestic fuel market in Russia, leading to rising prices and a reduction in oil product exports.
Explosions were heard overnight in Novoshakhtinsk, Russia. Later, the Acting Governor of the Rostov region, Yury Slyusar, reported a fire at the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery.
