The IAEA confirmed that as a result of the strike, a structure located 350 metres from the reactor at the Bushehr nuclear power plant was hit and destroyed.
"Although there was no damage to the reactor itself nor injuries to staff, any attack at or near nuclear power plants violates the seven indispensable pillars related to ensuring nuclear safety and security during an armed conflict and should never take place," said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
Strike on the Bushehr nuclear power plant
The IAEA previously reported that Iran had announced a strike on the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
According to Iranian media and the Rosatom corporation, the explosion occurred near the operating power unit, in the area of the meteorological service building; however, no damage to the plant itself or casualties among personnel were recorded.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called on all parties to exercise restraint to prevent a nuclear accident.
Meanwhile, Tehran accused an unnamed aggressor of violating international norms. It should be noted that a week before the incident, on March 11, Russia evacuated about 150 of its employees from the site.
