General Motors has unveiled a new armored SUV, the Chevrolet Suburban Shield, designed for the US State Department. This model features factory ballistic protection, according to GM Defense.

While the SUV resembles a standard Chevrolet, the press office asserts that it has been designed from the ground up, featuring an integrated armor capsule, reinforced chassis, and unique steering system. The exact level of protection has not been specified.

Gentry Smith, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security, stated to reporters that he has had the opportunity to test the prototype. He emphasized that the new Chevrolet Suburban Shield offers improved handling, excellent braking, and an overall more stable chassis. He also expressed hope that GM Defense's armored vehicles will help "carry out our mission to ensure the safe and secure conduct of foreign policy in some of our most challenging and dangerous posts."

Traditionally, US diplomatic armored vehicles are easily recognizable by their massive windshield frames, hidden emergency lights, and high-profile tires. The SUV will be offered in two versions: 1LT and 2LT. The first version features a standard three-row interior, while the second includes captain's chairs in the middle and folding benches in the back. The engines are standard, available as either a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 or a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel.

Armored Chevrolet Suburbans will be supplied to the State Department under a $300 million contract. The exact number of vehicles to be produced for diplomats and security personnel has not been specified; however, foreign armored vehicles in this segment typically cost at least $600,000 each.
