Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a peace agreement last week, pledging not to use force against each other, according to the text of the agreement released by the press service of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The peace agreement stipulates that Armenia and Azerbaijan "have no territorial claims against each other and will not make any in the future." The countries pledged to respect each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, the inviolability of international borders, and political independence.

"The parties will not take any actions, including planning, preparation, encouragement, or support of such actions, aimed wholly or partially at violating or undermining the territorial integrity or political unity of the other party," the document states.

Armenia and Azerbaijan also pledged under the peace agreement to refrain from the use of force or the threat of force against each other's territorial integrity or political independence.

The two countries will no longer station third-party forces on their borders.

The peace agreement provides that Armenia and Azerbaijan, following negotiations between border commissions, will conclude another agreement on the delimitation and demarcation of the state border.

Peace agreement

Last week in Washington, with the mediation of US President Donald Trump, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a peace agreement.

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan centers on Nagorno-Karabakh, a region in Azerbaijan where, until 2023, the majority were ethnic Armenians. After the collapse of the Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), the conflict escalated into war, followed by the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, when Azerbaijan regained a significant portion of the territories.

In 2023, Azerbaijan fully restored control over Karabakh, which led to a mass exodus of Armenians.
