Argentina considers the Falkland Islands occupied by Britain and wants negotiations for their return, Argentine President Javier Milei said during a meeting with US President Donald Trump, Sky News reports.

The Argentine president stated that he aims to address several "sensitive and crucially important issues."

"I wish to reiterate our legitimate claim in terms of sovereignty over the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands and the surrounding maritime areas that continue to be illegally occupied," Milei stated.

He also criticized the UN. According to the president, the UN must change, since the main goal of the Organization is to maintain international peace and security, and "everything else must serve that goal."

He also called on the UN to become more institutionally effective, not to allow international cooperation to hinder economic growth, and to recognize that where issues can be resolved at the national level, they should be settled in that manner.

Falkland Islands

Argentina claims the Falkland Islands (also known as the Malvinas Islands) based on historical and geographical arguments.

The country believes that the archipelago, located only 500 kilometers from its coast, should be part of its sovereign territory, since it was seized by Great Britain at the beginning of the 19th century. The Argentine government claims that the British resettled the population of the islands and that colonization was illegal, violating Argentina's rights to territory that historically was part of the Spanish colonies in South America.

Additionally, the archipelago holds strategic significance for controlling maritime routes and fishing resources in the South Atlantic.

The Argentine government expressed readiness to resume negotiations with Britain over the Falkland Islands back in January 2024. However, this has not yielded any results.
