A Russian bomber Tu-22M3 crashed in the Irkutsk region of Russia. The cause of the accident is likely a technical malfunction, according to the TASS Russian news outlet.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that its Tu-22M3 bomber crashed in an uninhabited area in the Irkutsk region. According to the Russians, no damage to the ground has been recorded.

Preliminarily, the cause of the accident was a technical malfunction. A search-and-rescue team has already arrived at the crash site to evacuate the crew.

TASS stated that there is no fire at the crash site; however, other Russian media outlets published videos showing a fire and smoke.

At the same time, according to Mash, the pilot was killed as a result of the plane's crash.

What is known about the Tu-22M3 aircraft

The Tu-22M3 is a Soviet strategic bomber that is an upgraded version of the Tu-22. It was developed to increase flight range and enhance combat capabilities. The aircraft made its first flight in 1982, and since then, it has become an important component of the USSR's aviation forces.

Due to its design, the Tu-22M3 can quickly reach distant targets with high precision. It is equipped with various types of missiles, such as the Kh-22, Kh-15, Kh-32, as well as guided bombs like the KAB-500. It is a powerful tool for delivering both nuclear and conventional strikes.

Last year, a Russian Tu-22M3 bomber also crashed in the Irkutsk region.
