Italy’s participation in US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace is problematic, Reuters reports.

Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti emphasized that "it seems there are some problems" regarding Italy’s involvement in Trump’s initiative.

Reuters, referencing Italian media, writes that Italy will not participate in the Board of Peace because membership could violate the country’s constitution.

Specifically, Italy’s constitution allows it to join international organizations that ensure "peace and justice among nations," but only "on equal terms with other states."

This is therefore incompatible with the primacy of the US President in the Board of Peace.

Trump’s Board of Peace

On January 15, Trump announced plans to create a Board of Peace, which would oversee post-war administration in the Gaza Strip.

Later, the US President sent official invitations to world leaders to participate in the Board of Peace. In total, representatives from 49 countries, as well as the European Commission, received invitations.

On Sunday, January 18, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that Donald Trump invited Budapest to join the newly formed board.

The next day, January 19, Russia said that the US had invited the Russian leader to join the Board of Peace.

It should be noted that Norway refused to participate in the board, stating that the idea does not align with United Nations principles.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also declined to join the Board of Peace due to the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Canada may join Trump’s Board of Peace, but it is not willing to pay $1 billion to participate.
