South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has proposed hosting a meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia in his country, according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Telegram.

The Ukrainian leader met with his South African counterpart on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Zelenskyy informed Ramaphosa about the intensifying drone attacks on civilian targets by the aggressor country, as well as the situation on the front lines.

"Unlike Russia, Ukraine is ready for a leaders-level meeting with no preconditions," the Ukrainian president emphasized.

He also thanked the South African president for his country’s engagement in the peace process and willingness to host a meeting at this level.

Zelenskyy-Putin meeting

Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently stated that Russian leadership has been repeatedly offered a leaders-level meeting in various countries and cities.

Such proposals have come from the teams of US President Donald Trump, European leaders — including French President Emmanuel Macron — and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Earlier reports noted that after two unsuccessful rounds of negotiations in Istanbul, the Ukrainian and Russian delegations agreed that a personal meeting between Zelenskyy and the Russian leader was necessary to achieve results.

In August, the Ukrainian president expressed readiness for a leaders-level meeting with Russia; however, Moscow continues its military actions and keeps imposing new conditions.

The Kremlin also claimed that Putin was ready to meet Zelenskyy, but presented unacceptable, capitulatory conditions. In early September, the Russian President proposed holding the meeting in Moscow, which the Ukrainian president refused.
