Braugher's death was confirmed by his publicist, Jennifer Allen, on Monday. He gained fame through his Emmy-winning role as Detective Frank Pembleton in "Homicide: Life on the Street" and later as Captain Raymond Holt in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."

Braugher was born in Chicago in 1962 and studied theatre at Stanford on a scholarship before attending Juilliard. His career included significant roles in films like "Glory" and television series such as "Last Resort" and "The Andromeda Strain."
