Andre Braugher, iconic captain Holt, dies at 61

Braugher's death was confirmed by his publicist, Jennifer Allen, on Monday. He gained fame through his Emmy-winning role as Detective Frank Pembleton in "Homicide: Life on the Street" and later as Captain Raymond Holt in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."

Braugher was born in Chicago in 1962 and studied theatre at Stanford on a scholarship before attending Juilliard. His career included significant roles in films like "Glory" and television series such as "Last Resort" and "The Andromeda Strain."

Distinguished career

Braugher's career spanned over three decades, starting with his film debut in "Glory" in 1989. Braugher was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards, winning two for "Homicide: Life on the Street" and the miniseries "Thief."

Braugher is survived by his wife, actor Ami Brabson, who also had a role in Homicide, along with their three sons, Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley. He is also survived by his brother, Charles, and mother, Sally.
