F-16 crash in Poland
On August 28, an F-16 fighter jet crashed in the Polish city of Radom. The aircraft went down while preparing for the international Radom Air Show. The pilot, Major Maciej Krakowiak, was killed on impact; he was considered one of Poland’s most promising pilots and a potential future commander of the Air Force.
The official cause of the tragedy has not yet been determined. The former commander of the 32nd Tactical Air Base, Colonel Krystian Zięć, pointed to human error as the most likely cause of the crash. Even experienced pilots like Krakowiak can make mistakes in the air.
A special commission is examining the F-16’s technical condition to rule out any mechanical failure. So far, there is no confirmation of a technical fault, but the investigation is ongoing. Military police, prosecutors, and the Aviation Accident Investigation Commission are working at the site.
The F-16 is a key aircraft in the Polish Air Force, used in training exercises and NATO international missions. Major General Ireneusz Nowak noted that human error is always possible and added that sometimes a pilot’s passion for aviation can cost them their life.
