American F-16 crashes off coast of South Korea
An American F-16 fighter jet crashed in the Yellow Sea off the coast of South Korea on Monday evening, December 11, during a training flight, according to Reuters.
The pilot reportedly decided to eject after an "in-flight emergency".
Shortly after the incident, the pilot was rescued in the Yellow Sea by the South Korean Coast Guard and returned to Kunsan Air Base. The U.S. Air Force said that the causes of the incident are under investigation.
The unit's commander, Colonel Matthew Goetke, expressed gratitude to the South Korean Coast Guard for rescuing the pilot and noted that he was in good condition.
The air base, located in the city of Kunsan on the west coast of South Korea, is one of the two main air bases used by the U.S. military in the country.
Crashes of American military aircraft
On November 30, a U.S. Army V-22 Osprey convertible with six people on board crashed into the sea in western Japan, killing at least one crew member, the condition of the others is unknown.
In August, a U.S. Osprey crashed off the coast of northern Australia while transporting troops as part of a military exercise, killing three U.S. marines.
Also in May, a U.S. Air Force F-18 fighter jet crashed during a demonstration flight at an air base in Spain. The pilot managed to eject.
