The United Kingdom and Germany have refused to assist US President Donald Trump in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Despite this, Washington says that more and more ships are passing through the strait, according to The Telegraph, Sky News, and Reuters.
British Energy Minister Ed Miliband states that the British government is exploring possible measures to restore shipping in the strait, but declined to make any firm commitments.
In particular, Ministers are considering the possibility of sending drones to search for mines in the Strait of Hormuz, but are not yet prepared to send military ships.
The Telegraph does not rule out that Britain's refusal to send military ships could lead to an escalation of the conflict between Starmer and Trump.
The German government also states that it will not provide any military support to restore the Strait of Hormuz.
"As long as this war continues, there will be no participation, not even in any effort to keep the Strait of Hormuz open by military means," a government spokesperson says.
He also emphasizes that the war in Iran has nothing to do with the NATO alliance.
Trump's call
Donald Trump called on countries that receive oil through the Strait of Hormuz to join in unblocking it.
He expressed hope that China, France, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and other nations would send their ships so that the strait would no longer be threatened by a state that has been completely decapitated.
In response to Trump's call, Australia, France, Japan, and China have already declined to participate militarily.
Shipping resumption through Hormuz Strait
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that an increasing number of ships were passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
"We are seeing more and more of the fuel ships start to go through. The Iranian ships have been getting out already, and we've let that happen to supply the rest of the world. We've seen Indian ships go out now ... we believe some Chinese ships have gone out," he says.
Strait of Hormuz situation
Earlier, Trump stated that he was preparing a joint operation in the Strait of Hormuz, calling on allies to join forces to patrol the region.
The White House confirmed the possibility of deploying US military convoys to ensure the safety of merchant ships amid the threat from Iran.
Europe is conducting secret negotiations with Iran, attempting to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis and avoid a large-scale escalation in the region.
