Russian attacks damaged all power plants in Ukraine, yet the country's energy system continues to operate thanks to the efforts of energy workers, physical protection of facilities, and support from partners in air defense.
This was reported by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his speech at the Munich Security Conference.
How the system keeps running
Despite widespread damage to energy infrastructure, Ukraine is still producing electricity.
"We still generate electricity thanks to our people. And we have kept our system running thanks to physical protection of the facilities, and thanks to everyone who helps us with air defense," Zelenskyy said.
Need for stronger air defenses
He emphasized that one of the most challenging situations occurs when air defense units have to use all available missiles to repel mass attacks, while resupply is delayed, even when intelligence warns of potential new strikes.
According to Zelenskyy, during one recent mass attack, Ukraine had to use missiles that had only arrived a few days earlier, highlighting the constant need for additional air defense supplies.
Current situation in the energy system
Power supply remains difficult not only in Kyiv but also in several other regions, where significant network damage has forced energy authorities to implement restrictions.
The president stressed that Russia carried out large-scale strikes on Ukraine's energy sector, using a high number of missiles and drones, causing severe destruction that will require prolonged restoration.
Experts, however, predict that the energy system could stabilize by April, as rising temperatures and the end of the heating season reduce the load on the networks.
