What is known about Sam Neill's death
According to the statement, the 78-year-old actor died on Monday, July 13, in Sydney, Australia. His family was by his side during his final moments.
Neill's loved ones described his death as sudden and unexpected. They also stressed that he had been in good health. Sam had overcome a rare form of cancer, which he publicly revealed in 2023.
The family thanked the staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their care and support and asked that their privacy be respected. They said details of the funeral arrangements would be announced at a later date.
He battled cancer but never lost his optimism
In 2022, Sam Neill was diagnosed with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer.
He spoke openly about his battle with the disease in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This? In the book, the actor said the illness had changed his perspective on life, but he never lost his sense of humor and continued working throughout his treatment.
Neill later revealed that his cancer had gone into remission, although he remained under medical supervision.
Sam Neill's life and career
The actor was born on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, Northern Ireland. When he was seven years old, his family moved to New Zealand, a country he would later describe as his true home.
Neill initially studied law but left university to pursue an acting career. His first major film role came in Sleeping Dogs, which launched his rise in the industry.
He later appeared in films including My Brilliant Career, The Final Conflict (Omen III), Possession, and The Hunt for Red October. However, he achieved worldwide fame after starring as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park.
Neill reprised the iconic role twice more in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion.
Over the course of his career, he appeared in more than 150 films and television series.
His best-known works also include The Piano, In the Mouth of Madness, Event Horizon, Bicentennial Man, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Peter Rabbit, as well as the TV series Peaky Blinders and The Tudors.
He loved winemaking and valued a simple life
Away from film sets, Neill spent much of his time at his vineyard in New Zealand. He often said that working among the vines helped him recharge after filming.
In one interview, the actor admitted that he was not afraid of death, but hoped to live many more years so he could watch his grandchildren grow up and continue developing the winery that had become such an important part of his life.
Political leaders pay tribute
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Neill as one of the country's greatest film figures, saying he helped put New Zealand cinema on the global map.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also offered his condolences, saying Neill left a lasting legacy not only in film but also in the hearts of audiences, who will remember him for his talent, kindness, and enduring sense of humor.
