A2 milk vs ordinary milk: Truth about digestion benefits

Milk remains one of the most controversial products in nutrition. On one hand, it provides protein, calcium, and vitamins, but on the other, it can cause discomfort for some people. Scientists are increasingly discussing an alternative: A2 milk, which may be easier to digest. Ukrainian professor and dietitian Oleh Shvets explains whether this type of milk is beneficial or not.
What is A2 milk?
Regular cow's milk contains two types of protein: A1 and A2 beta-casein. A2 milk contains only the A2 variant, which has a structure closer to the proteins in human breast milk, as well as in goat, sheep, and buffalo milk.
The A1 protein, during digestion, can release a peptide called beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7), which, according to some studies, may cause bloating, stomach pain, or diarrhea. Supporters of A2 milk believe it is easier to tolerate.
What do studies say about A2 milk?
A 2023 review showed that for people with sensitive digestive systems, A2 milk may indeed cause less discomfort. At the same time, scientists stress that there isn't enough evidence to recommend completely switching to this type of milk.
Additionally, A2 milk still contains lactose, so it isn't suitable for people with lactose intolerance or a milk protein allergy.
How is A2 milk produced?
To obtain A2 milk, farmers conduct genetic testing of cows, selecting only those that do not carry the A1 protein. Companies like New Zealand's A2 Milk Company test both the animals' DNA and the milk itself to ensure product purity.
In Ukraine, this type of milk is still rare because its production requires significant investment and specialized technology. If you experience discomfort after drinking regular milk, it may be worth trying A2. Science still needs to confirm its benefits before any conclusions can be made.
