8 household items that need to be replaced regularly
Some household items, such as cleaning supplies, may seem like they last forever. However, they actually need regular replacement, as over time they become less effective at doing their job, according to Lifehacker.
Laundry detergent and bleach
If you don't do laundry several times a week, you probably don't need to buy laundry detergent in large quantities.
While it doesn't spoil on its own, it loses its cleaning effectiveness over time, so it's worth checking the production date and recommended usage period.
Powdered laundry detergents work well for an extended period if they are kept dry. Bleach also starts to break down after about a year, losing its disinfecting and sanitizing power.
Surface cleaners
Similar to laundry products, the chemicals in household cleaning supplies break down over time, making them less effective at maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in your home.
If you frequently do a thorough cleaning, the product is used up fairly quickly.
However, if you find bottles that haven't been used recently, check them: anything that thickens, changes color, smells odd, or doesn't foam is likely expired.
Brushes and sponges
Although these cleaning items don't have an expiration date, they are often used much longer than recommended.
For example, it's advised to replace a toilet brush every few months; otherwise, bacteria can accumulate on the bristles and handle.
Kitchen sponges should be replaced approximately once a month, or you can use an alternative that can be disinfected, such as a silicone scrubber.
Sunscreen
Over time, this product, which is mainly used in summer, loses its effectiveness. Therefore, it is recommended to check the expiration date on old bottles before the start of the season, as well as when purchasing new ones.
Cosmetics and medications
Storing these products past their expiration date can reduce their effectiveness or increase the risk of the product spoiling or becoming contaminated with bacteria and fungi.
Although cosmetics may seem safer than expired medications, most have a recommended expiration date listed on the label. For instance, mascara should be replaced every few months.
Toothbrushes
According to the American Dental Association, a toothbrush or electric toothbrush head should be replaced approximately every three months—more frequently if used by a child or during illness.
An old toothbrush will not clean as effectively, leaving plaque and allowing germs to proliferate around the teeth.
Filters
Every home has nearly a dozen appliances—such as dryers, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and exhaust fans—that contain filters, all of which require regular replacement.
Filters ensure the cleanliness of the air, water, and clothing in your space. Depending on the type, filters should be replaced every 1-6 months.
Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers
Fire safety should be taken very seriously. Smoke and gas detectors should be checked every few months and replaced according to the recommended timeframe from the date of manufacture.
Disposable fire extinguishers also have an expiration date of 10 to 12 years, but the device should be inspected annually for defects and damage.
