Hot showers

Dermatologist Papri Sarkar says many people enjoy hot showers in winter, but they are not recommended for those with eczema.

Hot water can be harsh on the skin, irritating it and damaging the skin barrier. It strips away natural lipids (fats) that help retain moisture. In people with eczema, this barrier is already weakened, making the skin even drier.

High temperatures dilate blood vessels, increasing blood flow and leading to redness, swelling, and more intense itching.

Hot water also activates nerve endings in the skin, which can sharply worsen itching, triggering scratching and further deterioration of the condition.

Too long stay in shower

Excessive water exposure, especially at high temperatures, reduces the essential oils in the skin that are important for maintaining a healthy barrier. Showers should last no more than 10 minutes.

People with eczema are generally advised to shower no more than once a day.

Peels and scrubs

For people with eczema, it is important to avoid aggressive exfoliating products, as they can worsen the condition. This includes physical scrubs and chemical exfoliants such as AHAs, BHAs, and enzymes. Instead, use gentle cleansers specifically designed for eczema care.

If the skin is flaking, moisturizing is a must. Exfoliating already dry skin can do more harm than good.

Skipping moisturizer

After using a gentle cleanser, the skin needs to be moisturized with a cream.

It is essential to maintain a consistent skincare routine. Moisturize in the morning and at night using products designed for sensitive skin. Irritants such as fragrances, dyes, alcohol, and essential oils should be avoided.

Dry air

During winter, people with eczema should consider using a humidifier at home. Indoor heating can negatively affect the skin.

Using a humidifier can help restore moisture to the skin barrier, keeping it in the best possible condition, even during sleep.

Excessive stress

Stress can negatively affect the body and even trigger eczema exacerbation. Most diseases, both skin-related and otherwise, tend to worsen under stress. This is especially true for inflammatory conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema.

It is important to incorporate stress-relief rituals into daily life. Some people prefer yoga or meditation, while others opt for a walk in nature or intense cardio exercise.

Abandoning sunscreen

People with eczema need sun protection just like everyone else. A broad-spectrum mineral (physical) sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is recommended.

Common key ingredients in physical sunscreens include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

Ignoring allergens

People with eczema are more likely to have allergies to pets, pollen, dust, and certain foods. Contact with these triggers—especially in prolonged or high exposure—can worsen eczema, so it is best to avoid them as much as possible.

Looking for hypoallergenic, plant-based formulas is essential.
