7 laundry lifehacks to handle most common problems
Sometimes, standard laundry detergents can't handle certain stains or other challenges. In such cases, a few unexpected laundry hacks can come in handy.
Hairdryer for stubborn stain removal
When standard detergents can’t fully remove old stains like grass, dirt, or juice, a simple hairdryer can help. First, dampen the stain with water, then use the dryer to increase the temperature. This softens the dirt, allowing the detergent to work more effectively. Afterward, apply a small amount of detergent, such as laundry powder, and wash as usual. The added heat helps speed up stain removal, making it easier to lift old stains.
Avoid hot water for sweat-stained socks and clothes
Dirt on socks, cuffs, collars, and underarm areas often stems from protein-based sweat. Washing in hot water can cause these proteins to bind more firmly to fabric fibers, making stains tougher to remove. Washing these items at a temperature of no more than 86°F effectively removes stains without risking permanent binding.
Shaving cream for cosmetic stains
Makeup stains, such as foundation or lipstick, can be challenging to tackle. Shaving cream offers a solution. Apply a small amount to the stained area, leave it for five minutes, and wash as usual. Thanks to its ingredients, shaving cream helps break down cosmetic residues, simplifying stain removal.
Mouthwash for cleaning the washing machine
A regular mouthwash can disinfect and deodorize your washing machine. Pour half a cup into the detergent compartment and run a full wash cycle with an empty drum. Mouthwash effectively fights fungi, bacteria, and lingering odors, leaving your machine fresh and clean.
Baby shampoo to restore shrunk knitwear
If your knitwear has shrunk after washing, baby shampoo can help restore its original size. Soak the garment in warm water with shampoo until it softens. Lay it flat on a towel, gently stretch it back to size, and leave it to dry fully. This process helps the garment regain its original shape without causing any damage.
Aluminum foil for reducing static
Toss a few crumpled aluminum foil balls into the dryer to prevent static buildup on clothes after washing. Aluminum absorbs static electricity, so your clothes won’t carry a charge.
Dry towel for faster drying
Wrap a freshly washed item in a dry terry towel and run a spin cycle to speed up the drying process. The towel absorbs excess moisture, helping clothes dry faster — a convenient solution when you need something ready quickly.
