On the night of September 9, Greece’s capital, Athens, was shaken by tremors after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the southwestern coast of the island of Evia, according to ekathimerini.com and Reuters.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at 00:27 AM local time, with the earthquake gradually gaining strength. No reports of casualties or damage have been received so far.

The Athens Institute of Geodynamics reported on its website that the epicenter was located about five kilometers northwest of the town of Nea Stira, at a shallow depth of 13.6 kilometers.

Local officials noted the intensity of the tremors. Marathon mayor Stergios Tsirkas said the earthquake “was very intense,” but no destruction has been recorded. Similar reports came from Karystos in southern Evia.

According to Reuters, the quake was also felt in Athens, located about 50 kilometers northwest of the epicenter. The seismic focus depth was estimated at 10 kilometers. A fire service representative said no requests for assistance had been received yet, though teams continue to inspect for possible damage.

The tremors near Evia are a reminder of the region’s seismic activity, and experts strongly urge residents to remain vigilant and follow safety service instructions. The Institute of Geodynamics continues to monitor the seismic situation.

A strong earthquake was recently recorded in the Caspian Sea. The strongest tremors were felt in Dagestan and neighboring regions, including Makhachkala, Derbent, Kaspiysk, and Khasavyurt. Tremors were also reported in Chechnya, Astrakhan, Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Aktau, and across Azerbaijan.

In addition, a powerful earthquake struck the Drake Passage, which separates South America and Antarctica, on the night of Friday, August 22. According to Ukraine’s Akademik Vernadsky station on the continent, the tremors reached magnitude 7 on the Richter scale.
