US President’s special representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, said he will meet Ukrainian representatives in New York this week, describing the meeting as an important step toward ending the war.
"This is a significant signal. We speak with the Russians every day. I believe we may soon see a bilateral meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia," Witkoff said in an interview with Fox News.
Peace negotiations
On August 16, US President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where the two leaders discussed potential scenarios for ending the war in Ukraine.
Two days later, on August 18, Trump hosted Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European Union leaders at the White House. Following that meeting, Trump phoned Moscow and announced preparations for a bilateral summit between the Ukrainian and Russian leaders.
Zelenskyy has said that this week the Ukrainian side will hold a series of meetings with US partners aimed at drafting a basic framework for security guarantees.
Witkoff earlier stated that the United States hopes to end both the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East by the end of this year.
