White House chief Donald Trump said that during his meeting in Washington with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders, the parties discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, and that allies were ready to provide them to Kyiv, according to Trump’s post on Truth Social.

Trump said that security guarantees would be provided to Kyiv by various European countries in coordination with the United States.

"During the meeting we discussed Security Guarantees for Ukraine, which Guarantees would be provided by the various European Countries, with a coordination with the United States of America," stated President Trump in a post on Truth Social.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

The US has proposed security guarantees for Ukraine modeled on NATO’s Article 5, though not granted directly by the Alliance. Crucially, such guarantees would only take effect if a peace agreement with Russia were signed. Article 5 of the NATO treaty stipulates collective defense, meaning that an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all.

Zelenskyy welcomed the US initiative and outlined his vision for the arrangement, stressing that guarantees from the United States and European partners must be highly practical and provide protection "on land, in the air, and at sea."

One of Trump’s advisers also commented on the proposals, not ruling out the possibility of stationing US troops in Ukraine as part of the guarantees.

Meanwhile, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said that Vladimir Putin had agreed to security guarantees for Ukraine from both the United States and Europe.
