Russia attacked Kharkiv with drones and missiles on the night of February 3. The enemy deliberately targeted the city’s energy infrastructure during freezing temperatures, causing significant consequences and forcing emergency measures.

RBC-Ukraine reports everything currently known about the impact of the attack on Kharkiv.

Key points:

  • Kharkiv was attacked with drones and ballistic missiles.

  • The city experienced multiple powerful explosions over several hours.

  • Energy infrastructure was targeted, forcing water to be drained from heating pipes.

  • Two people were injured.

  • The Brovary and Izyum communities in the region were left without electricity.

How Russia struck

Kharkiv was attacked by a drone on the evening of February 2. With the arrival of the new day, ballistic missiles repeatedly hit the city. Explosions from rockets continued intermittently over several hours.

"The attack on Kharkiv has been ongoing for more than three hours," Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported at 03:39 AM Kyiv time.

Consequences

According to Terekhov, Russian forces deliberately targeted energy infrastructure to cause maximum destruction and leave the city without heat during severe cold.

The strikes forced authorities to drain water from heating pipes, leaving 820 buildings without heat.

"We already understand that we will have to make difficult decisions. One of them, forced but the only possible one, is to drain the heating system in 820 buildings supplied by one of the largest CHPs to prevent the network from freezing," the mayor said.

There may also be disruptions to city electric transport. To keep the city moving, additional bus routes will be deployed.

In response, 101 Resilience Points are operating in Kharkiv around the clock, and additional heating points will be opened if necessary.

Casualties

Kharkiv Regional State Administration head Oleg Synehubov reported that two men, aged 27 and 58, were injured.

Impact in region

Local authorities confirmed that the Brovary and Izyum communities were left without electricity due to emergency situations at energy facilities.

This night, Ukraine faced yet another combined attack by Russia. In addition to Kharkiv, explosions were reported in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Sumy. Details on the explosions and types of attacks used are covered in a separate RBC-Ukraine report.

Separate coverage details the damage and other consequences recorded in five districts of Kyiv.
