Russia attacked Sumy and the surrounding region on the night of February 3 amid a wave of combined strikes across Ukraine. In the regional capital, the attacks damaged residential buildings and sparked fires, leaving residents without heating, according to Sumy Mayor Artem Kobzar and Konotop head Artem Semenikhin.

Attack on Sumy

According to Mayor Artem Kobzar, strikes on Sumy resulted in hits on apartment buildings in the Zarichnyi district, on different streets.

He reported that the first strike hit the seventh floor of a residential high-rise, damaging the building’s heat supply system and shattering up to ten windows. Another strike hit the fourth floor of a different building, causing a fire and damaging a balcony and windows.

Preliminary reports indicate that there were no injuries or fatalities in either incident.

The Ukrainian Air Force had earlier warned of groups of attack drones over the Sumy region. An air raid alert was declared across Ukraine due to the threat of ballistic missiles and high-speed targets from occupied Crimea, with monitoring channels reporting possible Zircon missiles.

Konotop also under fire

Konotop Mayor Artem Semenikhin reported that the city was shelled by Russian forces, resulting in the destruction of one private house and damage to a school and infrastructure facilities.

He said that no one was killed, all emergency services were working, and affected residents would be provided with alternative housing starting in the morning. A commission to document the damage was also set to begin work early in the day. Specialists were already on site to organize assistance for those affected, he added.

Earlier, on the night of February 3, Russia launched a combined attack on Ukraine using missiles and drones. Cities including Dnipro, Kyiv, and Kharkiv were targeted, with loud explosions reported.

More details on the overnight attack on Kyiv, its consequences, and casualties are available in a separate RBC-Ukraine report.
