The war in Ukraine cannot end on the battlefield; it will end through diplomacy, US Senator Marco Rubio said at a UN Security Council meeting.

He noted that the longer the war continues, the more lives are lost.

Rubio said there was even a likelihood of escalation, pointing out that in recent days there had been a record number of strikes as well as the use of drones. He added that the US president had repeatedly stated there was a possibility of imposing additional sanctions on Russia if necessary.

He also stressed that the war should end as soon as possible. Rubio warned that if this did not happen, President Donald Trump would take measures to ensure that further aggression became costly.

US position on war in Ukraine

US President Donald Trump has said he believes the war in Ukraine could last for a long time.

At the same time, he has not ruled out that Ukraine could restore its territorial integrity and even "go further."

After his meeting with Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the United States was capable of pushing Russia toward peace.

Zelenskyy also said that Trump had promised to provide Ukraine with security guarantees after the war ends.
