Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said US leader Donald Trump would provide Ukraine with security guarantees after the war ends, according to Zelenskyy’s conversation with journalists.

Zelenskyy met with Trump in New York today. According to the Ukrainian leader, he had a good impression of the meeting.

He said that he could not state Trump would do everything Ukraine wanted or needed, but that the US President took a positive view of the issues raised by the Ukrainian side and of their impact on the path to peace. Zelenskyy stressed that Trump viewed these topics positively, as well as their influence on peace efforts and the deeper significance of the matters discussed.

Zelenskyy also spoke about US security guarantees. He explained that it was difficult to describe in English without revealing everything, but emphasized that Ukraine understood Trump was prepared to provide security guarantees after the war ended.

When asked what those guarantees might look like, Zelenskyy said that he did not yet know all the details since nothing was on paper, but that work on the matter would begin, with teams starting discussions at the end of September. He added that this would involve different areas, sometimes drones, sometimes other types of weapons needed for security guarantees, and that the process would not take one, two, or three months, but that it was a positive step that the teams would begin work at the end of this month.

Security guarantees and Zelenskyy's visit to New York

On August 18, US President Donald Trump hosted Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House. Discussions on post-war security guarantees for Ukraine began with that meeting. The guarantees are expected to cover security on land, at sea, and in the air.

As for New York, on the night of September 22–23, Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian delegation arrived in the US to participate in the UN General Assembly, a summit on the return of Ukrainian children, the Crimea Platform, and to meet with Trump.

After the meeting with Trump, Zelenskyy said that the US president now trusted him more than Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.

Trump, for his part, said today that Russia’s economy was collapsing and that Ukraine could fully restore its territorial integrity and perhaps "go even further."
