Train crashes into bus in Mexico: at least 10 dead, over 50 injured

One of the most serious railway accidents in recent years with multiple casualties has occurred in Mexico.
This was reported by the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico, according to Reuters.
According to police, the accident occurred on the morning of Monday, September 8, in an industrial area on the highway between Atlacomulco, a city about 115 km (71 miles) northwest of Mexico City, and Maravatío in the neighboring state of Michoacán.
There, a freight train collided with a double-decker passenger bus.
As a result of the accident, at least 10 people were killed and more than 60 injured. Among the dead were seven women and three men.
According to preliminary reports, the bus was moving along the railway tracks in heavy traffic when a high-speed locomotive suddenly appeared and struck the middle section of the bus. The impact dragged the bus along the rails before throwing it off the track. There were no barriers or warning signs at the site, and other vehicles had also been crossing the tracks just before the collision.
Local authorities have not yet provided detailed information about the causes of the accident or who may be responsible for the tragedy.
Fatal bus accidents are relatively common in Latin America. According to Mexico’s latest government report, in 2023 there were 12,099 accidents on federal highways, causing more than $100 million in damages, 6,400 injuries, and nearly 1,900 deaths.
On Tuesday, August 20, one of the deadliest road tragedies in recent years occurred in western Afghanistan.
A bus carrying Afghan citizens recently deported from Iran crashed on a highway near the city of Herat and caught fire. According to official local authorities, at least 76 people were killed, including 17 children.
