Will China stop buying Russian oil like India? Ukrainian expert’s forecast

India, Brazil, and Türkiye may refuse to purchase Russian oil due to the threat of secondary US sanctions. However, China will not do so and will not sever economic ties, as it is already too closely linked to Russia, states historian and diplomat Roman Bezsmertnyi in a comment to the YouTube channel of RBC-Ukraine.
The expert explained that all talks about the possibility of China severing ties with Russia can be considered unfounded. Moscow has already become a satellite of Beijing.
"The fact is that currently, within BRICS — or more precisely, within the part of BRICS sometimes called the axis of evil — there is an internal system: a development bank and a designated currency that can function as a means of payment. Therefore, it is clear that in this regard, China will not break off relations. It will continue to cooperate for as long as possible because even in the current situation, it is beneficial," he explained.
Bezsmertnyi reminded that not long ago, Beijing and Washington were able to resolve their customs and tariff relations. Therefore, it is unlikely that even after the 50-day period expires, US President Donald Trump will impose tariffs on China for purchasing Russian oil.
"The 50-day period is not accidental, nor is the Senate’s decision to postpone the matter until autumn. Well, in case China goes rogue and tries to pursue its further imperial plans, it is obvious that the US will have this tool in reserve. But based on the current situation, it is quite difficult to predict that Trump will take such steps," the expert concluded.
Trump’s ultimatum
On July 14, Trump warned that countries purchasing Russian energy resources could face secondary sanctions. However, these sanctions would be imposed only if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a peace deal with Ukraine within 50 days.
The introduction of US tariffs could seriously affect the export of Russian oil to China, India, and Türkiye — the main buyers of Russian energy resources. Initial signs have already appeared: India, considered one of the largest importers, has expressed readiness to replace Russian oil in case Trump’s sanctions are enforced.
