Ukrainian expert comments on Trump’s idea to meet with Putin

American President Donald Trump stated that without his personal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the war in Ukraine would not end. However, such statements are nothing more than illusions, states political analyst Ihor Reiterovych in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.
"Trump started talking about how there will be no end to the war without a meeting with Putin. What else did he say — that Trump knows what the Russians really came for, or about political demands that Ukraine will not fulfill?" — the political analyst remarked.
Reiterovych stated that, in his opinion, this is about Trump having a very high opinion of himself.
"That is, that everything depends on me and, accordingly, I can resolve everything there. On the other hand, he probably has some understanding — again, a personalization of Russian, for example, politics. And until Putin says something on camera, it is unlikely to be implemented in practice. That’s kind of what he’s hinting at," the political analyst explained.
He also noted that even if Trump meets with Putin and they come to some agreement, they still won’t be able to implement anything unless they agree with Ukraine and Europe.
"That’s an important point. Trump still holds the illusion that they can have a normal conversation with Putin, and Putin will listen to him on some issue. I actually doubt that. That’s why Trump is delaying this story, because if he really wanted it badly, believe me, Putin would run to the first call. He would be ready to meet personally," Reiterovych emphasized.
At the same time, he believes that there are probably some preliminary agreements, but they are in a format that the United States is not satisfied with, and that’s why there is no personal meeting.
"Well, on the other hand, the likelihood of it happening now is probably higher than it was, for example, just yesterday," he concluded.
Meeting between Trump and Putin
Notably, yesterday, after Putin ignored a personal meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Türkiye, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US does not expect a breakthrough from the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
However, he said that a personal meeting between the presidents of the US and Russia could supposedly move the process from a deadlock.
Later, Trump himself stated that he does not expect any progress in the negotiations on Ukraine until he personally meets with President Putin.
Meanwhile, Deputy Assistant to the US President and Senior Director for Counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka noted that the meeting between Trump and Putin will take place when the right moment comes. He also mentioned that their meeting is "imminent."
