Trump wants to strengthen Russia to weaken China, expert says

China is not interested in ending the war in Ukraine, as this could strengthen Russia. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump could use a stronger Russia as a tool to pressure Beijing, states Valerii Klochok, head of the Vezha Center for Public Analytics and chairman of the Nova Doroha Charitable Foundation, in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.
Klochok noted that the challenges China is currently creating for the Eurasian continent remain underestimated. In his view, Europe is currently playing up to Beijing, while Trump, judging by his actions, has a clear intention to weaken China, although the course of events may bring certain adjustments.
The head of the Vezha Center for Public Analytics said that a summit between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the US president is currently being prepared and could take place in June or July. According to the expert, it will largely depend on the course of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
He stated that China is categorically against ending the war in Ukraine. However, he noted that under former US President Joe Biden, China’s position was more hesitant.
“China is not interested in Russia gaining even the slightest strength. Trump understands this and is willing to let Russia grow stronger, but under one condition: if it helps him settle issues in the Middle East with Tehran and sign a nuclear-free agreement, and of course, end the Russian-Ukrainian war. Only then could Russia begin to regain some capacity for recovery,” Klochok said.
He also pointed out that, according to global analysts’ forecasts, Russia’s GDP growth in 2025 is not expected to exceed 1.5% — a figure he considers critical for the country.
“Trump’s plans are ambitious — they’re truly grand. How well he’ll manage to implement them depends on many factors,” Klochok concluded.
US-China negotiations
Recently, the head of the White House once again urged China to call him to begin talks aimed at resolving the trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies.
However, according to Western media, China has stated that it wants to see a series of steps from President Donald Trump’s administration before Beijing agrees to enter into trade negotiations with the US.
